A majority of Uganda’s population does not have access to piped water.

69% of Uganda’s population is rural based. Nearly all those communities rely on drilled water sources that are accessed by a community hand pump. On occasion, we find large communities of people that have no access to clean water at all – they draw water from nearby swamps and shallow wells. Deep water wells are classified as water sources 30+ meters (90ft+) which access clean water underground aquifers – any water source less than 30 meters in depth is at risk of contamination and needs to be treated. Often, we encounter communities that have deep water wells, but they have broken down because they have exceeded their functional life.

In water scarcity situations, we witness humans drawing their water from shallow sources where they are subject to contamination from local fertilizers (non-regulated), from livestock, and leaching from nearby pit latrines. When a deep-water source fails, or doesn’t even exist, it often affects several hundred people – on a daily basis.

Our Projects

We work to supply and restore clean water sources to impoverished rural communities in Uganda. First, we look to rehabilitate any deep-water source within a community that is no longer functioning (or partially functioning). If we identify a community with no existing deep-water source, then we will drill a new one. Finally, we add fencing around the water source to keep livestock from contaminating the area.

How We Work

We collaborate with local government officials to help identify communities experiencing water scarcity. Subsequently, we rigorously study the community, its needs and verify any nearby water sources. After the project completion, we train a water user committee to help manage the water utility and often help that community manage and collect small usage fees for future maintenance needs.

01

COLLABORATION

We engage with the local government officials as they are the best information sources of issues within their communities. These officials often have records of existing water sources in the area and contacts of leaders within each community. We collaborate with these officials the entire time and actively work to involve them on the ongoing management of the water source. At the end of every project, we have water samples tested by the Ministry of Water to be certified clean water sources – these certificates are held with the local officials.

02

SURVEYING

Our projects are selected based on extensive surveying of the communities and any nearby water sources. We collect population and demographic data so we can track the demand on the source and our impact. We also spend time talking with the community about their water scarcity issues and any health impacts of the existing or previous water sources. We survey nearby water sources for depth, condition and approximate distance from community centers. Finally, in any rehabilitation project, we survey borehole mechanics and any records to understand the age of the water source, materials used and the points of failure that need to be addressed.

03

TRAINING & EMPOWERMENT

We adhere to the World Health Organization’s and Ugandan Health Ministry’s recommended community training protocol—Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programming (WASH). After our water projects are completed, FoundRising staff train a selected water user committee, comprised of members of the community, on WASH principles and how to maintain the community water source to maximize the useful life. WASH principles trains communities on how to improve the hygiene and sanitation around water sources and how water is stored and transported. What good is clean water if it is poured into a contaminated container?
